the Fine Rule - things we developed at work

something that we started using in my office circa 2000. getting my boss to buy in was the easiest thing I have ever done. fine.

the Fine Rule

a) fine - fine. I have bought your argument. we can move on to the next step/topic. You ahve convinced me. I do not require the rest of your sales pitch.
b) got it - no really, I understand what you are saying. got it. we can move on.
c) shut up - now you are just talking to hear yourself talk. I got it 5 mins ago and you wont shut up alreay. no really shut up.
d) SHUT UP - escalate as loud as your wish. they are so rude and self-centered that there is no need to even pretend to be polite to them.

We found that while working, we would run into people trying to sell us on their idea. they would have this long explanation/rationalization prepared in advance. guessing that we wouldn't or couldn't understand them if they explained the idea at a high level. Their psychological commitment to their pitch was such that you had trouble getting them to stop, long after you died of boredom. this was particularly true of slideshows/presentations. we spent all this effort putting together the pitch? dont you want to see it all? NO!!

Our goal was to stop wasting time and get on with our jobs.
(if you have said fine already, you should have stopped reading lines ago. there really is nothing else to add)

one caveat or problem is that idiots dont like the fine rule. they want to her themselves talk. they think it makes them sound smart. I find this a good thing.

ME: Fine. next topic.
Idiot: but I have finished yet.
ME: I got it. you dont have to explain more. what's next?
Idiot: your aren't listening.
ME: shut up. (unless they are a senior manager and then I have an emergency bathroom break. practice fake puking is good for this. and then dont come back)

pete on education

TOTAL.FARK.com: (5601520) This just in: dumbfarks with no skills get paid less than smart people with serious degrees. no, your english degree still is worthless

RodneyToady: namatad: why are you giving the same number of loans and the ammount of money for degrees with little or no payback expectation compared to a field where there is expected payback?

history/english/women studies? small loans to a small number of students.

math/science/eng/comp sci/medicine? larger loans to a larger number of students.

It's kind of impractical, though. This isn't like buying a house, in which you can look a credit score and the price and make an assessment of ability to pay the loan back. Would someone be forbidden from changing majors? Many students aren't allowed to declare a major until their sophomore or junior year... what happens to the freshmen? Are we going to use high school GPA or SAT scores to determine loan eligibility?

Plus, some of the majors tend to have useful skills embedded in them. A BA in Psychology is more or less useless if you want to "practice" psychology, but it's obviously useful if you want to go to graduate school in psychology. It also tends to give a good background on statistics and research methodology, as well as (potentially) aiding someone who wants to work in marketing or advertising. Pair graduate psychology with a law degree, and you can do some pretty lucrative things. If you don't get the initial loan, you may never get there. I assume that for certain other non-STEM majors, you can get similarly useful skills.

Now the next logical question is, even taking that into account, is there an oversupply of people even in those advanced fields, that will limit earning potential, the way it is with law, for example? I don't know. Probably. In which case, is there even a real point in going to college and accruing massive debt for a significant chunk of the population? And if there isn't a real point, and people begin to doubt how beneficial college is to the extent that they go in smaller numbers, are we looking at a higher education "bubble"?

supply and demand for any field changes over time.
with less young people being born, there is less demand for k-12 teachers.
with more people getting OLD, there is more demand for health/old people care. (the full spectrum, from drs to ass wipers)
with more manufacturering being automated or shipped to cheaper labor, there is less demand for human robots.
there is a continuous need for people in the trades. low to middle paying jobs. people need to eat, sleep, be entertained.
so there will be a constant demand for cooks, waitors, entertainers, managers, store clerks.
there is a fixed demand for law enforcement and sercurity, esp as long as we have consensual crimes. if you got rid of all the consensual crimes and the black markets which come with them, you are left with assault/murder/rape/robbery.

many/most scifi has predicted a bored lower/middle class living on the dole watching tv/internet/games. kind of like we have now.

so yah, society will continue to change and mutate in ways we have predicted and not predicted.

at some point we wont be able to afford the cost of unpaid school loans and the loan system will dramatically change.
at exactly that same point, the education system has/will change to meet those needs.

how many schools already have tons/most classes on line?
at what point could you get 1-3 years done real cheap from home and spend 1-2 year paying for the stuff you cannot do remotely?
at what point is the goal now finishing high school to get into undergrad become finishing undergrad to get into the best grad schools?
kids will stay home until they finish their undergrad and compete for grad school.
those that dont make the cut will do what people have always done, something else.

/change is good
/unless you are a fear-monger and then change is ZOMG THE END OF THE WORLD IS COMING!!!

inscription or the things I do to make a ton of gold - in 900 easy steps

this is what I do. you dont like it, you can always continue doing whatever you currently do to make gold.
you can replace inscription with enchanting or jewelcrafting.
same process holds for them as glyphs.
in the end, as long as the mats

in no particular order

INK - jessica sellers - ink trader

ATSW - use an addon to make glyphs

quick auction - for the love of god, you must use an addon to post glyphs

postal - you must have a mail addon to get canceled auctions

resetting prices - sometimes you have to reset the prices. use the BUY tab (think it is from quick auction, but could be from auctioneer). it lets you buy things in bulk, when they are posted in stacks of 1. ugh

two toons - one for crafting and mats, one for posting on the AH. two accounts can go even further.

know your competetion! save their names on your friends list. undercut them when they logoff.

quick auction - the only way to post on the AH

without this addon, you should stick with farming trash/herbing/mining to make gold. people using this addon will kick your ass.

there are a number of great guides on how to use this addon.
1) you add the glyphs you want to sell to the list

2) you change the default prices and number of item you want posted and the undercut amount.
  • I set my default price at 100g (top price I will ever list at)
  • I set the low price to 3g (cause I want to run the tard out of the market)
  • I only will post/repost 2 glyphs at a time. reason? because some tard will undercut you and you will have to cancel your undercut auctions and then relist them.
  • set undercut to 1c.
3) cancel! automatically cancels all of the auctions which you have been undercut. runs for a bit, pops up a button, then cancels everything. saves you a billion hours.

ATSW - or dont make glyphs using the built in interface

use anyone of a number of addons which let you QUEUE the things you want to make. while you still have to press a button between things, you can do this while not paying attention.

dont make 5-10 glyphs at a time. make 40-60 of one glyph.
if you dont think you can sell that many of that glyph, then you need to research which glyphs sell.

jessica sellers - ink trader

she is in dalaran inscription shop.
she will exchange ink of the sea for any other lower ranked ink.
the best way to get the lower inks is to buy/make ink of the sea and then trade for what you need.

I typically will not pay more than 5g for any ink.
Buy cheap northrend herbs (1g each or less), mill, make ink of the sea, trade for the lower ranked ink which you need.

Solar Cycle Progression and Prediction

Solar Cycle Progression and Prediction

meh

TOTAL.FARK.com: (5532084) Conservatives outnumber liberals 2-1, yet the left's institutional stranglehold on society and insidious smears of the right with the failed leftist malignancies of fascism actually mean that many conservatives are too scared to speak out

TOTAL.FARK.com: (5532084) Conservatives outnumber liberals 2-1, yet the left's institutional stranglehold on society and insidious smears of the right with the failed leftist malignancies of fascism actually mean that many conservatives are too scared to speak out

Msol: Are people unable to change their minds about things? Right and Left are not hard-coded into us, I think? God, why does this have to turn into some sort of conflict.. can't people form NEW opinions ever again?

/getting tired of this

some things are VERY deep set.
think about murder or farking a 5 year old.
no matter how much you think about this, your opinion will never change.

very rarely people become murders. but if you are a murderer, while you might stop, it isnt like your opinion on it has changed.

people tend to become more conservative over time.
when you are 20, who cares if you have health inssurance.
when you are 40 and have a wife and 3 kids, you damn well WANT inssurance of all kinds!!

religion gets strange
we are indoctrinated by our parents
we are TOLD this is the one true god/religion and all the rest are false.
as we get older, some people break away, some join different religions, some leave for a while, some get closer to their religion.

it becomes physically harder to change views as we get older.
pretty sure that there are studies ...

one of the most horrific traps are being brainwashed into NOT changing your view.
think about people who are raised to HATE gays and blacks and democrats/liberals (they want to tax us and take our guns!!)
or the people who recycle religiously, vegans and want to SAVE THE PLANET

the trap, is that in order to CHANGE your views on any of these things, you have to be able to say that you were WRONG. few people can do that about minor things. being able to do that about major things is VERY VERY VERY hard.

a person who is a VEGAN for moral reasons (eatting meat is murder) will rarely ever switch to eating meat. this would require them to say, FINE ok to murder these sheep and eat them.

it might be easier to change a view on something which has more of a science behind it. recycling is MANADORY versus recycling many things wastes huge amounts of energy. a person COULD be swayed to change their view.

but when your RELIGION says that gays and blacks are not even people, learning to be tolerant and changing your opinion can be almost impossible.

saddest part is that there are NUTS on both sides which think that they are not nuts.

and both extremes make life hard for the majority in the middle ...

prez vote difference over last 80 years

FranciscoBizzaro: Another nice element to the EC is it provides instant, indisputable outcomes. It avoids teh need for a nationwide recount and the attendant disruption that would cause.

yes and no
how often has there been a need for a statewide recount for a presidential ballot? not very common

how often was the vote difference nationwide close enough that you would really need/require a nationwide recount?

certainly it would be NICE if we had a national voting platform, rather than the crap we have right now. (optical scan gets my vote, paper trail ftw)

IF we did vote directly for prez, would certainly make for interesting recount issues. but in the end, you would techinically only need to recount when the vote is close enough that tampering could have effected the outcome.
difference
2008 10m
2004 3m
2000 450k - hmmm, maybe a nationwide recount would have been a good thing. we spend billions on the campaign, a recount would be a 10th of that. worth it. esp if it found and fixed fraud.
1996 8m, 1992 6m, 1988 8m, 1984 17m (lol), 1980 18m (lol), 1m, 1972 18m (nixon!),
1968 500k (man, a nationwide recount would have been a nice way to avoid nixon!!)
1964 16m,
1960 100k (boy did we need a recount for this one!!)
9m, 7m, 2m, 3m, 5m,
1936 11m (523-8 nice fdr), 7m,

so as you can see, there has only been 3 elections in the last 80 years where the numbers were close enough to think about a recount. it has been predicted that in the future, presidential elections will be closer and closer, with more karl rovian electorial math driving where the dollars get spent. Hillary claimed that she was the better candidate using this thinking. she could win the critical states. Obama turned it aorund and used grassroots to try to win every state.

so unless we see a change in voting, I dont think recounts will be a major issue/worry.

CCN - Comedy Central News

soooooo I have a new idea which I am pitching to comedy central. CCN - Comedy Central News.

It would be the a spin-off of the Daily Show. It would present sound bites from the news, showing just how retarded people are saying one thing and then later saying the complete opposite.

Eaxmple: look at the GOP and DEMS positions on reconciliation. Both sides have claimed that it WAS EVIL, when they were in the minority and WONDERFUL when they were in the majority.

The show would run after midnight. The presenters would be hot babes in bikinis.
The show would rock.

outline of my new book

actually ....

would be interesting and EASY to do non-violent terrorism, which would have greater impact and be easier to do

1) buy diesel, perlite (which LOOKS like AN fertilizer) and some steal drums. (NONE of these purchase will raise ANY flags)

2) put together some fancy looking wires and a clock

3) tape to drum,

4) steal a pickup truck or van

5) leave some of the oil and perlite outside of drum where it can easily be seen.

6) park truck outside of federal building with blinkers on.

7) walk slowly down the stairs to the subway and escape

8) watch the PANIC on TV

/did I mention that I am writing a novel about the teahadists?

I'm meltinggggggggggggggggggggg my PC

looks like most or all of my PC crashing problems have been caused by over heating
YAY
easy to fix

evidently the tards who write the software for the video card automatic fan setting think ROASTING HOT is an ok temp. (they were running the fan at 15% while the card was 60c YOUCH)

turned it up by hand to 50% and TADA, much cooler, still cant hear squat and tada no crashes since then.

EVEREST ultimate addition

my PC is trying to kill me.

so, my PC continues to do its CRASH thingy. after more google searches, I started to read some of the CLOSE but not quite what I was getting problems.

"PC HANGS but then recovers"

I thought my PC was COMPLETELY dying. but, when it finally happened again, I didnt reboot. I just left it sitting there and waited.

TADA
NEW INFORMATION
my PC "recovered" after a few mins???
"Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered"
got this EXACT thing 3 times last night.
YAY something NEW

search on THIS gave me completely different leads.
from memory setting problems to weird windows patches to loose video card power connectors to wonky power supply problems.

yes all the drivers are up to date

so in some ways this is good news, I have a new msg to research and track down.
rather than a vague feeling that the soundcard/ventrilo were causing crashes.

2010 03 30 - crash

crashed again at ~9:40 pm ....
ventrillo was running
wow
virtualbox
a ton of IE8 websites open

keep in mind that probably the ONE variable all day was VENT
didnt open vent until raid time ~8pm ....
everything else was open all day ....

my next PLAN
is to close everything before I raid tomorrow (assuming I raid) ....

also going to think about creating some virtual memory

another point of order ....

my C drive is a RAID-0, 2 drive, SSD
is it possible that the SSD's are causing something ......

oh yes
after rebooting
I started vent and wow
played for 2 more hours and had no crash ....
which doesnt rule out anything but ....

installing winxp in a virtual box

14:16 pressed go using an ISO on and existing HD
GAH, you need at least 1100mb??? so 1gb is too small
start, again, sigh

finished clean install

something about guest additions
wide screen, blah blah blah

install guest additions and auto resize works
next to instal vpn and remote desktop is mine

virtual box - getting that old pc to run in a virtual box on your new machine

step 1
create a VDI of your old machine's boot disk
vmware has a free software thingy
get it use it
http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/

well, tried this with the drive on the NEW machine
so that was fail
moving drive back to the OLD machine and trying it there

oooo and will do the mergeide step too I think

step 1 again
ran mergeide (who knows, makes changes to registry to make export better)
ran vmware thingy on machine while it was running
exported the C drive just fine
copied the file to NEW windows 7 x64 where I will be running vbox

step 2
well, importing the vmdk into vbox was epic fail
thinking it is time to use a diff tool to make vdi
sigh

ooo and old favorite is back
winimage
I think I have been looking for this
no really
you shut up
no you

try # 9001
cygwin as administrator (important bit here)
mount //./E: /dev/old
dd if=/dev/old of=/cygdrive/c/oldpc.dd

so in theory I am making an image of the old C drive ....
we shall see if the next step works

step 10
convertfromraw oldpc.dd oldpc.vdi
admin problem as usual
running in cygwin window ...
working

this ran without error

step B

image is read only
jesus wept
really?
I did a chmod 777 so it SHOULD be ok ....
blargh

at this point, I give up

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

drivers, because I can

starting with video
thinks it is uptodate
guess it is possible the windows image they installed had everything installed already?
sweet if tru

installing cygwin
cause I NEED my unix window sometimes
mostly so I can mess with massive_files.sh
cause I dont believe anything that MS tells me about its file system
(you try copying 35TB, 1.5 million files and let me know what happens)

turned file index off, screw you, dont need no stinking index

flashdrive copy of massive_files.sh
cause I am too stupid to think of different method?
no wait
gmail to the rescue

16:49
my desire to shun unix idiots is now 100%
I spent over an hour trying to figure out a cygwin issue.
turns out they decided to remove a feature (dos text versus unix text)
the solution when you search on google?
we dont care fix your files

blarghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

in the REAL WORLD people use windows and when we use cygwin, a tool made for WINDOWS we use cygwin on WINDOWS FILES.
end of rant
visit me in jail

16:50
copying wow
SSD to SSD
22gb usb connector, gonna take 12 mins
clearly will need to do something other than watch

turning the damn thing on

14:53
so it is out the box, plugged in, cabled, and what not
first test is simple, in case I have to unplug everything and toss from window

power, keyboard, mouse, monitro network.
sadness
turned it one
VERY quiet
nothing on the monitor
SADNESS
chirping from the floppy, thinks it is booting
no monitor

FRAKING IDIOT
the cable isnt attached to the monitor
YAY for stupid people
I am NOT an RTARD.

oh look windows is up
so I have NO idea how long the boot took.
sigh

BLARGH
I have to type in my windows OS code now?
lawl

answered qtupid questions
windows started, turned it all off.
ok
once I figure out how to turn it back on, interesting problem, if you can NOT hear that your computer is on, how do you KNOW that it is booting.
60 seconds
from the time I pressed go, till the time windows was open.
YAY
crazy fast boot

now to screw everything up
keyboard works, mouse works, monitor works
internet works, yay google

CREATE RESTORE POINT NOW
this is it
I can always come back to this restore point and start all over again.
in theory

so it works minimally
I need to update all the drivers for windows
need to copy wow, cause that is the WHOLE point of this
need to test test test

and doing that will break everything I am sure
lawl
13:38
box is here. started unpacking. first thing I did was examine OUTSIDE of box. was there dings? places where they dropped it?? nope. little bumps here and there, but none of the "kill me now" that happens sometimes.

the bottom of the outer box was suffering from having only one piece of tape on it. was starting to break open. 6 more days of shipping probably would have. meh.

opened the big box. was foam, NOT peanuts. nice.
the case is inside the original box the case came in, so there was a box in a box. nice.
much less chance for everything getting banged up.
keyboard is off on its own, cheap, dont care, wasnt planning on using it.

GIANT ziplock bag filled with bits and pieces. disks and cables. stuff and more stuff.

took a couple quick pics with phone.
frak.
had to clean the desk off to make space for new toy. plus I need to work today. so cant turn the old computer off yet. frak.

YAY cleaner desk with more space.
maybe THIS time it will stay this way.
HAH, not a chance in hell.

13:46
dug out my old keyboard and mouse.
I HATE all the new ones.
I LOVE my old natural keyboard and big old MS mouse.
(yes I know whatever crap you use is better. yes I know that you hate my keyboard. good.)

13:48
removing the CASE from the case box is one of those chinese puzzle boxes.
you can be a tard and lift it out. pain in the ass. you can rip the box, worse, cause then how do you send it back when it is dead???
tada, the trick is to open the BOTTOM, sit the box down on the ground, open side DOWN, and then lift the box off of the case.
(regular styroblocks around case, nice and steady in shipping, yay, NO dents on outside of box)

14:20
evidently my boss has priority over playing with new computer
HAH

oooooo super foam packing inside the case
keeps stuff from shaking lose during shipping
NICE

this is why I paid SOMEONE else to put it all together for me!!
I could have bought all the parts
but lazy ass pete would have been sloppy sloppy sloppy

14:27
jealous much?
those are a raid-0 SSD
over 9000 in hard drive power with NO SOUND

hahahaha
over the POWER socket, there was a sticker
THEY REALLLY DONT WANT you turning your computer on with the foam inside.

so, if this doesnt work today, I will be the kid with the broken toy on XMAS.
crying like a baby in my beer
wait, what? you didnt have beer on xmas as a kid?

eyup
took cover off again, cause I am the stupid, and didnt remove the plastic cover protecting the plastic window
sigh
story of my life
put things together, take them apart

14:39
thinking about cables and turning things on
sigh
the moment of truth

more pics
why did I get a floppy drive?
oooo but the EXTERNAL, builtin media ports will make me happy I think

14:46
sooooo I knew that I had a video cable SOMEWHERE in the house.
why was it the last place I looked?

speeding up framerate

this is a stream of concisouness list of what I did while working to increase my frame rate. the theory is that by testing before and after each change, I will know which change had the most bang for the buck.
FPS is being measured by ctrl-R (later by fubar or who knows)
  1. started in dalaran. road around for a while
  2. all video is already set to LOW except for particle density
  3. FPS: 6.5 - 8.2, lat 40 - crappy (used moveanything to move the FPS to better location)
  4. turned carbonite off (certainly dont need it to raid) - no difference (didnt really expect one)
  5. pallypower? on my druid? why does this even load if you are not on a pally? wait, can non-pallies config the raid now? interesting
  6. turned off a bunch of addons (domines buff and cast), epgp (not lootmaster), fubar (but pretty sure that wasnt it), loggerhead
  7. FPS: 10 - 22, lat 35 - what ??? great, now I have no IDEA which one made the difference

I love advice threads. I'm going to sum up every single advice thread Fark has ever had.

I stole this from someone.
Ready?

Submitter: "Help! HELP! I'm stuck in a well!!!"
Farkers1-4: "Climb! Climb up and take our hands!"
Submitter: "I'm thinking I should dig... should I dig?"
Farker5: "NO! I was trapped in a well, and digging is a bad idea! Climb out!"
Farkers6-8: "We're lowering ropes! Take hold of a rope!"
Farker9: "I've even tied a harness to the end of this one!"
Submitter: "I can feel the ropes, but I don't want to hold onto them... should I dig?"
Farker10: "No! If you dig, you'll hit water, and then you'll be proper hosed. I should know, I almost drowned."
Submitter: "I dug a little bit just now, and I haven't hit water. I'm gonna keep digging..."
Farkers11-18: "No! Climb! Climb out!"
Submitter: "Guys, I'm seriously stuck in this well! Help! HELP!!!"
Farker19: "I was trapped in a well once. It took me two years, but I managed to build a climbing machine that pulled me to safety out of a well bucket and a pocket watch. I'm dropping the blueprints, extra buckets, and an assortment of pocket watches."
Farker20: "I've engineered a jet-pack that will rocket you to safety. Stay where you are and we'll lower it down!""
Submitter: "Thanks for your help, guys. I'm gonna keep digging. I'll find the Mines of Moria and I'll just walk to the surface."
**Farkers1-20 piss in the well**
Farker21: "Guys, seriously... stop peeing in the well."
