I always cracked up when the show would go as follows:
1) federation has evolved beyond the need of money
2) crew is playing poker
it is impossible (completely uninteresting) to play poker with using a token of value. Call it MONEY.
That token could be a chit for exchange of services. You take my watch. Clean my room. Any service.
This is the definition of money. It is the value of our time.
The idea that the federation didnt have money was "stupid".
