crashed again at ~9:40 pm ....
ventrillo was running
wow
virtualbox
a ton of IE8 websites open
keep in mind that probably the ONE variable all day was VENT
didnt open vent until raid time ~8pm ....
everything else was open all day ....
my next PLAN
is to close everything before I raid tomorrow (assuming I raid) ....
also going to think about creating some virtual memory
another point of order ....
my C drive is a RAID-0, 2 drive, SSD
is it possible that the SSD's are causing something ......
oh yes
after rebooting
I started vent and wow
played for 2 more hours and had no crash ....
which doesnt rule out anything but ....

installing winxp in a virtual box
14:16 pressed go using an ISO on and existing HD
GAH, you need at least 1100mb??? so 1gb is too small
start, again, sigh
finished clean install
something about guest additions
wide screen, blah blah blah
install guest additions and auto resize works
next to instal vpn and remote desktop is mine

virtual box - getting that old pc to run in a virtual box on your new machine
step 1
create a VDI of your old machine's boot disk
vmware has a free software thingy
get it use it
http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/
well, tried this with the drive on the NEW machine
so that was fail
moving drive back to the OLD machine and trying it there
oooo and will do the mergeide step too I think
step 1 again
ran mergeide (who knows, makes changes to registry to make export better)
ran vmware thingy on machine while it was running
exported the C drive just fine
copied the file to NEW windows 7 x64 where I will be running vbox
step 2
well, importing the vmdk into vbox was epic fail
thinking it is time to use a diff tool to make vdi
sigh
ooo and old favorite is back
winimage
I think I have been looking for this
no really
you shut up
no you
try # 9001
cygwin as administrator (important bit here)
mount //./E: /dev/old
dd if=/dev/old of=/cygdrive/c/oldpc.dd
so in theory I am making an image of the old C drive ....
we shall see if the next step works
step 10
convertfromraw oldpc.dd oldpc.vdi
admin problem as usual
running in cygwin window ...
working
this ran without error
step B
image is read only
jesus wept
really?
I did a chmod 777 so it SHOULD be ok ....
blargh
at this point, I give up

drivers, because I can
starting with video
thinks it is uptodate
guess it is possible the windows image they installed had everything installed already?
sweet if tru
installing cygwin
cause I NEED my unix window sometimes
mostly so I can mess with massive_files.sh
cause I dont believe anything that MS tells me about its file system
(you try copying 35TB, 1.5 million files and let me know what happens)
turned file index off, screw you, dont need no stinking index
flashdrive copy of massive_files.sh
cause I am too stupid to think of different method?
no wait
gmail to the rescue
16:49
my desire to shun unix idiots is now 100%
I spent over an hour trying to figure out a cygwin issue.
turns out they decided to remove a feature (dos text versus unix text)
the solution when you search on google?
we dont care fix your files
blarghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
in the REAL WORLD people use windows and when we use cygwin, a tool made for WINDOWS we use cygwin on WINDOWS FILES.
end of rant
visit me in jail
16:50
copying wow
SSD to SSD
22gb usb connector, gonna take 12 mins
clearly will need to do something other than watch

turning the damn thing on
14:53
so it is out the box, plugged in, cabled, and what not
first test is simple, in case I have to unplug everything and toss from window
power, keyboard, mouse, monitro network.
sadness
turned it one
VERY quiet
nothing on the monitor
SADNESS
chirping from the floppy, thinks it is booting
no monitor
FRAKING IDIOT
the cable isnt attached to the monitor
YAY for stupid people
I am NOT an RTARD.
oh look windows is up
so I have NO idea how long the boot took.
sigh
BLARGH
I have to type in my windows OS code now?
lawl
answered qtupid questions
windows started, turned it all off.
ok
once I figure out how to turn it back on, interesting problem, if you can NOT hear that your computer is on, how do you KNOW that it is booting.
60 seconds
from the time I pressed go, till the time windows was open.
YAY
crazy fast boot
now to screw everything up
keyboard works, mouse works, monitor works
internet works, yay google
CREATE RESTORE POINT NOW
this is it
I can always come back to this restore point and start all over again.
in theory
so it works minimally
I need to update all the drivers for windows
need to copy wow, cause that is the WHOLE point of this
need to test test test
and doing that will break everything I am sure

box is here. started unpacking. first thing I did was examine OUTSIDE of box. was there dings? places where they dropped it?? nope. little bumps here and there, but none of the "kill me now" that happens sometimes.
the bottom of the outer box was suffering from having only one piece of tape on it. was starting to break open. 6 more days of shipping probably would have. meh.
opened the big box. was foam, NOT peanuts. nice.
the case is inside the original box the case came in, so there was a box in a box. nice.
much less chance for everything getting banged up.
keyboard is off on its own, cheap, dont care, wasnt planning on using it.
GIANT ziplock bag filled with bits and pieces. disks and cables. stuff and more stuff.
took a couple quick pics with phone.
frak.
had to clean the desk off to make space for new toy. plus I need to work today. so cant turn the old computer off yet. frak.
YAY cleaner desk with more space.
maybe THIS time it will stay this way.
HAH, not a chance in hell.
13:46
dug out my old keyboard and mouse.
I HATE all the new ones.
I LOVE my old natural keyboard and big old MS mouse.
(yes I know whatever crap you use is better. yes I know that you hate my keyboard. good.)
13:48
removing the CASE from the case box is one of those chinese puzzle boxes.
you can be a tard and lift it out. pain in the ass. you can rip the box, worse, cause then how do you send it back when it is dead???
tada, the trick is to open the BOTTOM, sit the box down on the ground, open side DOWN, and then lift the box off of the case.
(regular styroblocks around case, nice and steady in shipping, yay, NO dents on outside of box)
14:20
evidently my boss has priority over playing with new computer
HAH
oooooo super foam packing inside the case
keeps stuff from shaking lose during shipping
NICE
this is why I paid SOMEONE else to put it all together for me!!
I could have bought all the parts
but lazy ass pete would have been sloppy sloppy sloppy
14:27
jealous much?
those are a raid-0 SSD
over 9000 in hard drive power with NO SOUND
hahahaha
over the POWER socket, there was a sticker
THEY REALLLY DONT WANT you turning your computer on with the foam inside.
so, if this doesnt work today, I will be the kid with the broken toy on XMAS.
crying like a baby in my beer
wait, what? you didnt have beer on xmas as a kid?
eyup
took cover off again, cause I am the stupid, and didnt remove the plastic cover protecting the plastic window
sigh
story of my life
put things together, take them apart
14:39
thinking about cables and turning things on
sigh
the moment of truth
more pics
why did I get a floppy drive?
oooo but the EXTERNAL, builtin media ports will make me happy I think
14:46
sooooo I knew that I had a video cable SOMEWHERE in the house.
why was it the last place I looked?
