education in 20 years

of course BUT ...
I can walk on the sidewalks for FREE.
public parks and libraries and schools and ERs and police and firemen and EMTS and prisons and courts ...

... so yah
SOCIETY has decided to PAY for MANY THINGS (by collective gathering of resources) to help make SOCIETY a better place to live.

We are MUCH better off as a society when our children are educated. College used to be ONLY available to the elite, then "everyone" and now in some ways, many are priced out of the market again.

a) PUBLIC universities used to be effectively free. I went to UoI, lived at home, finished with zero debt. (but that was a million years ago)
b) so maybe PUBLIC universities sliding scale .... and community college free to any and all.

BUT .... SHE is wrong because it horse-cart vs cart-horse.
MAKE ALL college debt forgivable in bankruptcy, and make it retroactive. TADA

THIS will allow people who made dumb choices to escape. Just like EVERY OTHER DEBT.
THIS will also force the banks to evaluate the loan from a cost benefit analysis, unlike the CASH COW that it is today.

(blah blah, millions of unintended consequences)

MEH ... ALL OF THIS ignores .... online education. Which is HERE TODAY.

20 years from now, going away to college will be the exception.
Certainly will be able to take MANY of the courses from home, etc etc etc.

HELL, will people still NEED education in 20 years?
:D

scanning photos

Buy or rent a Kodak PS50 which scans 50-100 photos a minute or you can outsource your scanning to a contractor. Note that a scanner will often pay for itself with just one client, as companies generally charge $0.25 to $1.50 a picture for scanning. This would be a separate charge along with your hourly fee. You can also hire a teenager to do your scanning for you at a lesser rate if there’s a lot to do.

2020 prediction - general election

Scenario one - Dems Nominate a contender who picks a great running mate.
The election is close and up to the wire.

Scenario two - Dems Nominate another milktoast, with a yawn VP, and run the dumb campaign that doesn’t campaign enough in all the swing states.
Easy GOP win.

Scenario three - shitty Nominee (Hillary again, Biden with shitty running mate)
Trump wins in a reaganesque 1980 landslide. (Ok, would be THAT bad, but still)

second thoughts on dem primaries

second thoughts on dem primaries

part one
SO in one of my more recent rants, I repeated the "primary system is so broken and so stupid".
As an afterthought, I realized, "whoops, electoral college".
OBVIOUS FUCKING POINT
THe first primaries should be on the SAME DAY.
And should be the battleground states. All of them.
(easy enough to fix the NH/IOWA bull shit problem. Make the law in the battleground states be "one day before NH and IOWA)
why
#1 FUCK IOWA and NH - they are NOT representative of how we are going to win. period.
#2 we want/need candidates that are going to WIN the swing states.
We also needed another RULE CHANGE:
Winner of the nomination is presidential candidate.
Runner up is VP candidate.
TADA
Incentive for MANY candidates to STAY IN THE RACE.
added to list of things that might be logical, and we will never do them

part two
yes no sort of maybe and almost anything would be better than what we do now ...

pros
1) MIGHT reduce some of the bullshit internal attacks
2) would help generate candidates working towards second place
3) would help build up candidates for future elections, something that we fail at
4) giving candidates INCENTIVES to not drop out so early should be a GOOD THING ....

cons - harder to generate this "list", we havent had a lot of close races to work with ....
1) "theory" that you put this guy in VP slot to win that ONE or two states .... Al Gore or Johnson would be the exemplars, but ...
I would argue that we are LONG PAST those days.
2) we have had some shitty VP slots .....

exemplars
2008 Obama Clinton
(looks at the map)
Yup, it was a dead tie, WE the voters like BOTH, a LOT.
Putting them on the ticket together would have combined the excitement.
HARD to say "I hate that HE won and she is OUT", when she is on the ticket

2016 Clinton Sanders
(looks at map)
Yup, very similar, and with very interesting possibilities.

part 37

My Real Worry ... is ...
That we get a divisive winner, who puts in a "who is that" VP and we get nowhere.

I am guessing that Hillary was offered the spot in 2008 and took SoS instead.
I ... havent heard if Sanders was offered the spot in 2016.
(quick google, looks like no)
BUT ... IF he had ... and he had accepted ... how might things have been different?
TWO excited groups would still be excited.
CLEARLY his accepting would have stated
"I TOOK THIS, so we could WORK TOGETHER!"

meh
they didnt change the rules, they wont change the rules
but IF WE GET crushed again ( ;-) ), we should rethink the damn rules, because we clearly have learned nothing.

family history and DNA

Pete thought of the day - WITH a large enough DNA POOL, and enough research, will future humans need "FAMILY HISTORY" as part of their medical records??
How much of my "FAMILY HISTORY" is writ large in my DNA?

was reading a different article on how big 23 and me's database is .... it is fucking HUGE ...

TBH, we will be seeing MORE of this, not less, and I am OK WITH THIS.

Things to expect in the NEAR FUTURE:
1) companies offering to sequence your DNA for close to free, in order to have access to the DNA
2) more and more genetic testing for treatments
3) we might be in the EARLY DAYS, but quickly will become the golden days of combining genetics with treatments ...
4) privacy is an NON sequitur - I clicked the box, KNOWING that this would happen. You dont like it, dont click.
5) AND my DNA will be helping you and everyone else. The larger the pool, the more help.

TOSS in that this data is being used to catch serial killers and rapists?
GOOD!!
TOSS in that some kids are able to find their birth parents, if for NO OTHER reason, that getting access to accurate family histories.

WHOOPS,
IF we can drive enough genetic based information, do you need family history ever again??
